To handle a redevelopment plan in a historic core which experienced the baptism of China’s first urban commercial civilization one hundred years ago, is a rare chance to rethink the present planning principles, management mechanism, classes evolution and economic operation.
The Chinese idiom “The things are there but men are no more the same ones” is a precise definition of the site. The original “British Concession”/”The 3rd Special Zone”, streets, Lifeng, mansions, newspaper and press offices are still physically stand there as the front stage, while the political&economic operation, cultural characteristics, and construction belief behind the stage, as long as the performers on the stage were totally displaced. When people recall the past glories with full grievance and then appeal for the immediate preservation, their voices turn to so poor as being quickly overwhelmed by the roaring of the urban harvester. The reason comes from the absence of the spokesman of original urban vitality, spatial quality and value producer, which are open street block and consistent interface as they could not find their foothold in the city anymore.
Therefore, the plan try to redefine the traditional street block clarified by road, street and alley, and reorganize it to gain the opportunity of its rebirth. On the consideration of the architectural form, the design intends to interpret the local words from the context with the same syntax to make sentences meaningful and readable.
