City Regeneration of the Historical Core Yuxi, Yunnan.2013

With the threaten of the tide of new urban construction, how could the historical heart be regenerated and perform as an engine to submit the everlasting power to the city around?  This is a key question in Yuxi.

The 34 ha site, once the entire area within the city wall for 500 years old and keeps perfect Ming Dynasty fabric and large number of old traditional houses , and which is still in the central part of Hongta district, now declines quickly.

Our vision is reusing old fabric to integrate into, influence, and finally lead the development of the surroundings. It can be supposed to be the city heart which would define the city’s identity in terms of culture and characteristics in future.

1. The image of the site

--livable street network
The various micro-economic activities all are arranged along the historical street with shop façade joined each other with a little bit changes, either by degree or by setback ---overall outline a Chinese picturesque town

--the multi-court unit
The dominate house unit is consisted by three or four courts linked to each other in the depth, which clearly define the high density organization of different activities—shop, work, dormitory and private house in one unit.

2. The city’s single center
From the spatial analysis, we discover that the site area and with its catchment play the role as the single center in the overall city. Moreover, the site and its south neighbors have the spatial potentials to grow to dual-center of the city in the future.

3. The principles of urban design

--Using the street network as the medium to recover and inspirit the life of the old town.

--The land use plan focused on improving the life, communication, working, and sharing within different classes.

--Using those key points located on the edges of the site, which have potential to embed and integrate the surroundings, to adjust and strength the inter-relation between old and new.

--fully conserve the deformed wheel structure which was already built in local’s cognition map long time ago. The protection also includes the overall façade of these main streets and extent to the first court of the units along the streets.

--Introduce the module and selected types of architecture into the old town. Building height control desponds on the different area defined by the traditional and the modern character.

--Fully integrate traditional aesthetic with the contemporary life style.
