今天,处于几乎所有城市趋同性的快速城市化的大背景下,从城市空间视野,一方面,人们在享受物流的发达、远距离的功能使用与一站式体验的同时;另一方面,人们越来越依赖机动的出行、跨区域点到点的空间转移、被动地追逐处于不稳定状态的土地利用。由此带来了对区域概念的模糊判断、城市印象的动态地碎片化拼接与由此不断的对自我认知的否定。


如果说城市及其空间能够塑造城市人群的气质与行为,那么当下人际行为的冷漠、虚饰 与紧张是否是城市空间的影射?即使在一个快速发展时期,我们是否依然可以拥有一个普遍认同、实用、效率、可持续的空间?抑或过程中的必然代价?绵延百年的完整的汉口原租界的肌理可能是国内不多见的另类逻辑。


原汉口五国租界面积约2平方公里。峰值常住人口25万。路、街、巷构成了租界区的基本网络结构,街区数量78个,街区平均占地面积(含周边道路红线中心线):2.56 公顷,线密度15.6公里/平方公里。道路红线12至18米。


1、各级稳定结构的依托成型。里分--邻里区--片区的递进层次清晰,局部与整体的中心衔接直接明了。


2、城市清晰、统一的公共界面,固化与涵养了城市文脉、主导了城市感知与意象。


3、路、街各施其责,并被使用者清晰地纳入认知体系,进而深刻影响着区域功能及地块身份与文化属性的形成。现仍存大量的以路、街命名的公共设施。


4、街区—这一高效的空间组织形式,最有效平衡了功能、容量、与品质三者间的关系,进而培育出独特的城市文化并散发魅力。




Today, in the era of the ever instant urbanization for almost every Chinese city, from the space’s standing point, on one hand, people are benefiting from the advanced logistics, enjoying the long distance services and one-stop experiences, on the other, we all are more depended on auto to overcome the distance from one point to the other, and forced to pursue the unstable land use. In turn, it brings the fuzzy realization of the area, the everlasting fragment matching, and as a result the constant negative of the self–cognition.


If the city and its space could shape the ethos and behavior of the citizens, are the contemporary people’s apathy, gloss and nervous the reflection of the space?  Even in such a rapid expansion period, can we still hold a space with shared recognition, utility, efficiency and sustainability? Or, should it be an inevitable cost? The fabric of one century year old original Hankow Concessions probably provides an unique alternative logic for the answers.


The area of old five concessions is around 2 skm, with the peak population 250k. The hierarchy of “road, street and alley” is a basic structure, composed by 78 open street blocks and average occupies 2.56 Ha, while the road density is 15.6km/skm with the road red-Line 12 to 18 meters.


1.The fractal structure is distinct and robust,with the hierarchy of Lifeng—neighborhood—function area is clear and local-global link is intelligible.


2.The clean and unified public ‘interface’ solidifies and conserves the urban context, and in turn dominates the city cognition and city images.


3.The roads and streets play different roles, and fit into people’s cognition system, which in turn, profoundly influence the formation of the area’s function and its identity. Till now, there are quite civil and public facilities named by the road and street they are located along.


4.It is the Street Block, such a high-efficiency space organization form, that balances relationship within function, capacity and quality, and having bred the charm of local urban culture.
